Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, largely due to civil wars, corruption, lack of education and HIV/AIDS. Infant and under-age-5 mortality rates are 11% and 19%. Corruption is prevalent in all areas of life. Protestants make up less than 5% of the population. Catholicism is the dominant religion (68%) while 23% practice different forms of tribal religion. The prosperity gospel is a popular message.
