The current state of Cameroon was formed in 1961 when the northern French Republic of Cameroon merged with the British controlled southern Cameroon. Cameroon’s per-capita GDP is one of the ten highest in sub-Saharan Africa. Corruption is prevalent in all areas of life. The country has a high level of religious freedom. Christians make up 40% of the population, while 40% practice tribal religions and 20% are Muslims. People from the northwest and southwest are largely Protestant and the southern and western regions are primarily Catholic. Many Christians combine their faith with animist beliefs. The prosperity gospel is prevalent in the country.
