Professor of Old Testament
Kyiv Theological Seminary
Twenty-nine years of political and religious freedom in Ukraine have provided tremendous opportunities for the spread of the gospel, and many who have experienced spiritual thirst have come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. Believers today need spiritual meat, discipleship, and deeper biblical study. Unfortunately, after 70 years of lack of formal theological education, Ukraine, like other post-Soviet countries, is experiencing a shortage of educated pastors and community ministers.
Kyiv Theological Seminary was founded in 1995 on the initiative of the All-Ukrainian Union of Evangelical Baptists and thanks to the vision of the rector of the seminary Anatoliy Prokopchuk. The aim was to create an educational institution that would provide thorough theological training of ministers in the field of theology. An old dilapidated building without windows, doors, heating - that's what the seminary looked like at first. However, God's invisible hand provided the first set of students -- three times more than expected. The first classes began in 1996 with a commitment to high academic standards and practical service.
In the twenty-five years since the seminary was founded, over 600 students have graduated from various theological training programs. Hundreds of other Christians have had the opportunity to attend educational events and receive specialized practical training in the seminary. Graduates of the institution perform pastoral, church planting, teaching, youth, chaplaincy, biblical counseling, and missionary service not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders.
Thanks to the high academic standards of the KTS curricula, students have the opportunity to continue their education in theological schools in Ukraine, Europe and the United States. Through the seminary training, the Lord has called many students to participate in church plants, and with God's help they have established more than 150 churches.
Now KTS leadership, convinced of the Lord's leading, is starting an integrated masters program centered on proper interpretation and application of every part of the Bible to prepare trainers for church planting, youth ministry, Christian education, and other church ministries. Furthermore, KTS is establishing the first Ukrainian doctoral program in exegetical biblical theology to train pastor-theologians for the churches and academies of Ukraine and beyond.
