How do you start a seminary in Haiti? I am not sure, and it definitely isn’t easy, but over the last three days, I have been able to sit with three Haitian Pastors who are doing just that. Pastor Emmanuel Prudent, Pastor Jean Patrick Marcellus, and Pastor Jean Garry Auguste are the leadership of Institut Biblique des Croix-des-Bouquet. The school is situated in a “suburb” of the teeming mass of humanity that is called Port-au-Prince. For over 15 years a local church that Pastor Garry was associated with put on a very successful pastors’ conference each Winter. When the pastors began clamoring for more and better training Pastor Garry felt God leading him to answer the call. In 2011 they launched the first cohort in their certificate program—it is completely led by and taught by Haitian pastors.
But their vision does not stop there. They wanted also to offer a bachelors and a post-bachelors level diploma program (and perhaps someday bachelors degrees and even a masters!?). This is why they reached out to TLI. With our help they are now running three programs (certificate, bachelors, and post-bachelors). This past weekend I had a beautiful time visiting the school, sitting in on some of our classes, preaching in Pastor Prudent’s church, attending and speaking at the graduation of the certificate students, and—most importantly—brain-storming with Pastor Garry and his colleagues about how to move the school forward. We talked through curriculum, finances, accreditation, and logistics. I learned a ton about what they are doing and how they have been able to make it work so far. Needless to say, along the way they face constant financial and logistical setbacks that would cause all but the fiercest entrepreneurs to pack it up and go home. I hope in the future to serve not only as an instructor at IBC but also as a consultant as they continue to pursue their vision for IBC in Haiti: De préparer des hommes prêts à enseigner fidèlement la Parole de Dieu et servir l’Eglise locale avec intégrité. (To prepare men capable to teach the word of God faithfully and serve the local church with integrity.)
Pray that the LORD would grant all they need to succeed in this vision. Pray that we would have wisdom to partner with them well. Establish the work of our hands, LORD, establish the work of our hands.
