Short-Term Teacher FAQ

Anyone who is pursuing a Master of Divinity, Master of Theology or doctorate is welcome to apply. If you are considering missions this may be a way for you to discern your calling. If you are considering the pastorate, this may be a way for you to see the need to commit to short-term trips for the rest of your life. If you are considering academic work, this may be a way for you to see how your scholarship can help Christians around the world.

An online application is followed up with a phone interview and then a face-to-face interview.

We have two different kinds of mentors. First, there are those who work full time for Training Leaders International. They oversee all of the trips and the teachers we send. We also have a few independent mentors. These mentors may lead one trip a year and are pastors and teachers in the United States.

Teachers will be paired with an experienced mentor who will help them prepare for each trip, accompany them during the trip and offer valuable debriefing after each trip. Each mentor has invaluable ministry and cross-cultural experience and will ensure their teachers are well prepared. The process with the mentor is crucial and will include hours of one-on-one time, assigned reading and interacting with people in the United States who are native to the country you are visiting. The proper mindset for teaching in a cross-cultural setting is a must.

Knowing that it is difficult as a student to raise money, we commit to helping you with the costs. But we do ask all of our teachers to raise money. Many teachers are surprised at how much support they are able to raise. We also require that you build a significant network of prayer support for your trip.

We commit to mentoring and sending a teacher on two teaching trips in order to aid in their development as a teacher. After the first trip the mentor will provide feedback so a teacher can apply the lessons they learned to the second trip.

Yes!  We encourage your spouse to come with.  There may be some trips where spouses can not come with.

Yes, we encourage women to apply for certain trips.

Once we select teachers, we’ll pair them with mentors, prepare them to teach and send them to train church leaders in a country where theological education is lacking. Each teacher will travel on two trips, typically lasting from 10-14 days. We ask all teachers to do their own fundraising, but we will help with the costs. A significant amount of reading is required a long with conversations with missionaries and national leaders from the country our teachers our serving?
