If possible, never give a donation by credit or debit card.
Let's say you donate $100 a month for an entire year. Because of the fees associated with credit/debit cards, roughly $3 of every donation does not go to the organization you wish to support, meaning $36 is wasted on a fee that could be avoided.
IRS rules are strange here, because you will get a tax-deductible donation receipt for $1200 that year, but in reality you have only donated $1164.
Imagine being an organization that is receiving $10,000 a month in donations via credit/debit cards. That means at the end of the year $3600 of that will not be able to be used by the organization. That is a lot of money.
When you donate to charity, use ACH, Bill Pay or mail the check yourself!
