There is one book we make everyone read on all of our trips. That book is Serving with Eyes Wide Open by David Livermore. In it, Livermore explains the strengths and weaknesses of short-term missions and tries to guide the reader to a better understand and practice of effective cross-cultural engagement.
This book is a helpful introduction for anyone considering short-term missions as a viable ministry to engage in.
